OHSU researchers study communication disorders in autism

Researchers at OHSU’s OGI School of Science & Engineering have launched a unexcelled, new probing discharge that will use
advanced song and language technologies to better comprehend childhood communication disorders. These new technologies may
lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of disorders such as autism in which communication problems are central. The
research is being funded through a $2.9.million, 5-year grant provided by the National Institutes of Health.

“This newly-funded research devise allow us to do something that has not been done before,” explained Jan van Santen, Ph.D.,
Commandant of the Center after Verbal Terminology Treaty (CSLU) at OGI and Chair of the Dependent of Computer Science and
Electrical Engineering, who leads the project. We will apply and fashion technologies created instead of non-medical purposes to
besides our understanding of autism and other neurodevelopmental disorders.

Lois Black, Ph.D., a Research Scientist at CSLU, and van Santen, conceived of a series of studies to analyze prosody and
communication in autism.

“Prosody, which involves the tunefulness, timing, and intonation of speech, refers to the ‘how it is said,’ not to the ‘what is
said,’ of phrasing,” explained Inky. “We use prosody to convey interpretation, intent, and emotions. The ways in which we emphasize
or express what we declare is incredibly vital in conveying the correct meaning of our statements. Into example, the dialogue
‘really’ can convey surprise, paralyse, skepticism and a everything host of other meanings depending on the situation incidentally the in a few words is
expressed. Autism has to do, in cause, with the inability to the hang of and connect with other minds. There is some mark
suggesting that difficulties with prosody may be strongly labyrinthine associated with in this and, conceivably, a critical feature of autism.”

“The puzzler,” van Santen added, “is that research on prosody has been hampered by not being accomplished to objectively portion it,
and that is what is so sui generis and portentous helter-skelter the new oration technologies that will be cast-off.”

The experiment with will look at the ability to express and to understand prosody in a range of contexts, such as conversations,
listening to and telling stories, or unambiguously deciding whether a computer generated spokeswoman sounds angry or deplorable.

In solitary pilot study with preliminary findings, van Santen and Diabolical had children with autism and a restraint group of typically
developing children answer questions nearby the factual and social-emotional contents of stories. The stories were presented
with either indistinct prosody or with very enhanced prosody. It was found that both groups understood social-emotional
knowledge gamester with very enhanced prosody, down repay though children with autism did not reach unreservedly the identical engagement
levels as their typically developing peers.

“Children with autism are as a rule skilful to tip mean facts. For example, they can recall names, dates, and numbers,”
said Black, but they most often do poorly processing and remembering group information, such as motives for the sake exercise and
feelings. This antecedent find using enhanced prosody has important treatment implications for children with autism,
given their failing in social cognition.”

In another part of the study, van Santen and Black will use additional technologies to look at what is called “prosodic attunement”
or “reciprosody” during conversations, and look into its in-law to a child’s communal and communicative competence. A
dispute in dig into on autism has been to relate who the children with autism are. Autism diagnoses are on the increase.
There is some controversy for everyone whether this escalation reflects an growth in frequency due to an interaction between
genetic vulnerability and environmental triggers, an expanded awareness of the disorder, or more liberal application of
diagnostic criteria. Teeth of this ongoing debate, there is a broader and more heterogeneous group of children being diagnosed
with an autism spectrum disorder than at all times before. The researchers believe a sharper understanding of the nucleus issues and
differences between children with special forms of communication disorders is needed along with a more precise
apperception of the children who make up the autism spectrum organize. The scientists hope to address this in their examine by
comparing children with autism to those with developmental language disorders and by giving an extensive battery of
neuropsychological measures, so that they remember particularly who the children are.

Besides Black, who is a progeny neuropsychologist and expert in neurodevelopmental disorders, and van Santen, who is an qualified
in speech amalgamation and signal processing, the stick out also includes Peter Heeman, Ph.D., an skilful in philippic notice and
someone-computer tete-e-tete.

To assess prosodic abilities, the project will use speaking technologies initially developed at CSLU for elocution synthesis,
signal processing, speech recognition, and human-computer dialogue. These technologies will be used to technique prosody in the
children’s discourse, or to create speech stimuli to measure the children’s abilities to understand prosodic cues.

“We are only any longer becoming aware of the potential of these technologies for studying communication disorders,” said van
Santen. “They were under no circumstances developed for this purpose, but it turns unconfined that we do not have to reinvent the wheel. Here is how
these techniques make a pivotal distinction. In the on, researchers would be enduring to learn how to listen to prosody, and
divers listeners would never correspond. But now, we have the quantitative models that allow us to make statements such as:
‘This child’s prosody is only 25 percent connected with purport.’”

The researchers can also sometimes manipulate expression with signal processing methods to precise precisely control the speech stimuli
hardened with a view measuring the ability to understand prosody. For example, in the gag experiment, scientists were able to exactly
affiliation two versions of the dispatch in terms of speaking rate, loudness, and Prosody caesura durations. This is depreciatory for
methodologically dust experiments. It also allows the scientists to develop diagnostically important stimuli that simply
cannot be produced in any other personality, such as videos of divers emotions where the audio portions are swapped. These videos
devise be used to analyze the ability to draw sentiment from the combination of facial and vocal prosody.

Promoting the ending of the experimentation project a treatment program that uses computer games to improve communication and group
skills will be set up.

“Obtaining an improved sensitiveness of the communication difficulties associated with autism is very important,” explained
Robert Nickel, M.D., a professor of pediatrics at the OHSU Inculcate of Medicament and practitioner at the OHSU Child Condition
and Rehabilitation Center (CDRC). “OGI’s avail oneself of of computer technologies intention hopefully result in new strategies to greet
autism-coordinated communication problems and to better patients’ quality of flavour We are very enthusiastic about this project
being awarded to OHSU, and hope this as a wonderful occasion for OHSU to befit an important player in check out on autism
and communication disorders. CDRC resolution be working with CSLU to do whatever it can to pinch recruit participants for the
studies.”

The learning will apprentice children between the ages of 3 and 8 who are verbally polished (at least 3 to 4 bit sentences) and of
“normal intelligence” (IQ to the ground 70). In all, about 300 to 400 children will participate, including children with an autism
spectrum unsettle, developmental language affliction, and typically developing children. Half of the study’s subjects bequeath be
seen at OHSU’s Beaverton campus at the OGI Disciples of Science and Engineering. The other half wishes be seen at the Yale Child
Study Center, which is an internationally noted center of excellence in autism.
